Cover of the book Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret by Benjamin Stevenson

Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret

By Benjamin Stevenson

Third book in the Ernest Cunningham series, and this one is a shorter holiday special. Still a fan, I apparently like detective books.

2024

Cover of the book Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari

Nexus

By Yuval Noah Harari

Harari shines when he looks back at history, but I struggle to agree with him whenever he makes predictions on the future (I had the same problem with Homo Deus). Too much stuff just feels neatly arranged to strengthen his points. Also, this book is anything but "a brief history".
Cover of the book Orbital by Samantha Harvey

Orbital

By Samantha Harvey

A whole bunch of beautiful words that say absolutely nothing. This book is essentially a “best of” collection of “look at how fancy I can write” sentences. Apparently, a lack of plot is worth a prize nowadays.
Cover of the book Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi

Navola

By Paolo Bacigalupi

I’m so torn on this. I loved the world-building and storytelling, but the protagonist’s whining annoyed me way too often. It’s also probably 80 pages too long. But now I’m hooked and want to explore more of this world.
Cover of the book Useful Not True by Derek Sivers

Useful Not True

By Derek Sivers

This book had less of an impact on me than Sivers' other books. YMMV!
Cover of the book The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

The Name of the Wind

By Patrick Rothfuss

It took me a long time to read through this, but I absolutely adored it. I understand now why people love this as much as they do. I can't wait to dig into the second book.
Cover of the book Be Useful by Arnold Schwarzenegger

Be Useful

By Arnold Schwarzenegger

I find Arnie to be a fascinating man. I listed to this as an audiobook, narrated by Schwarzenegger himself with his famous accent. It's the only way to consume this, imo.
Cover of the book The Stoic Path to Wealth by Darius Foroux

The Stoic Path to Wealth

By Darius Foroux

This book boils down to one sentence: “Invest your money and keep your emotions out of it.” It’s probably a good primer for people new to investing or Stoicism, but if you’ve read anything on either topic, you can skip this.
Cover of the book The Stardust Grail by Yume Kitasei

The Stardust Grail

By Yume Kitasei

Generally liked this book, but I found the backstory on most characters a bit lacking.
Cover of the book Right Thing, Right Now by Ryan Holiday

Right Thing, Right Now

By Ryan Holiday

Holiday is the indirect reason, I have a Marcus Aurelius tattoo on my left bicep, so I'll read all he writes. A good book, but in general the Stoic Virtues series doesn't impact me as much as his first series.
Cover of the book Moonbound by Robin Sloan

Moonbound

By Robin Sloan

I think I liked this less than Sourdough, but I generally enjoy Sloan's writing. I'm still excited by Moonbound #2.
Cover of the book American Gods (Comic) by Neil Gaiman
+

American Gods (Comic)

By Neil Gaiman

I am a sucker for mythologies. I loved the original book, and the TV show (season 1 and 2, they fucked it all up when they fired Orlando Jones), so I loved this comic, too.
Cover of the book Everyone on this Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson

Everyone on this Train is a Suspect

By Benjamin Stevenson

Apparently, I'm turning into something like Cunningham fan, so I naturally enjoyed this, too.
Cover of the book Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zhang

Land of Milk and Honey

By C Pam Zhang

It didn't really catch me. I loved the premise, I didn't love the prose.
Cover of the book Daytripper by Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon

Daytripper

By Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon

I don't love this as much as some other people on the internet do, but it's still probably one of the best graphic novels I've read so far (spoiler: I didn't read many yet).
Cover of the book Limbo by Dan Watters
+

Limbo

By Dan Watters

I adored this. It's basically American Gods but focusing only on Loa.
Cover of the book Blankets by Craig Thompson

Blankets

By Craig Thompson

The book that started my graphic novels fascination.
Cover of the book In. by Will McPhail

In.

By Will McPhail

A beautiful and bittersweet portrait of modern life, that I annihilated in one sitting. Very good graphic novel.
Cover of the book Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone

By Benjamin Stevenson

I absolutely enjoyed reading this. Guess I’m into crime novels now?
Cover of the book Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

Yellowface

By R.F. Kuang

As a fellow writer, I had zero sympathy for the protagonist of this book for a long time. Shows how well she was written.
Cover of the book Same as Ever by Morgan Housel

Same as Ever

By Morgan Housel

Certain things never change — like how I always enjoy reading Morgan Housel.
Cover of the book Novelist as a Vocation by Haruki Murakami

Novelist as a Vocation

By Haruki Murakami

More memoirs than how-to guide by one of the greatest authors alive.
